Mary Kanu's journey at MacLachlan College began during a significant transition in her life, having recently moved to a new continent. She remembers feeling nervous about starting at a new school, but the warmth and encouragement of her teachers quickly helped her feel at home. Among her favourite memories are the Grade 10 Ottawa trip, Alchemy Night, and participating in Drama Club.
Looking back, Mary fondly remembers the teachers who helped shape her experience. Mrs. Syrota made her transition to MacLachlan feel welcoming, while Mrs. Corbett offered guidance and encouraged her to finish strong. She also credits Mrs. Mingo with helping her overcome her anxieties around mathematics and science, something she never imagined would become such an important part of her future. Mr. Dominato also left a lasting impression, encouraging her to think creatively and develop the writing skills she continues to value today.
Although Mary originally planned to pursue Law after graduation, her interests eventually led her toward science and innovation. She began her professional career in consulting as an Experience Design Researcher before transitioning into Delivery Leadership, where she has worked with organizations including Moderna, Insulet, and the Boston Public Health Commission. Her growing passion for biotechnology also led her to a biomanufacturing apprenticeship at AbbVie, where she gained hands-on experience in drug development. Today, she is pursuing studies in Biology and Chemistry, with the goal of transitioning into clinical and scientific research focused on developing innovative therapies for red blood cell disorders.
Reflecting on her time at MacLachlan, Mary credits the support of her teachers and classmates with helping her develop resilience and confidence in the face of challenges. Her advice to current students is simple: "Also, try the hard classes!" For Mary, embracing subjects that once seemed intimidating opened doors to interests and opportunities she never expected. She remains grateful for the encouragement she received at MacLachlan and the lasting influence of the people who helped her discover what she was capable of achieving.
To prepare future-ready individuals, we need to share and instill common values across our school community and embed these values in everything we do.
