Empowering Change: MacLachlan College's Legacy of Service Continues

By: Rachel O'Hagan

As MacLachlan College's Alumni Manager, I regularly connect with our graduates and hear their stories. One common thread that often surfaces in our discussions is the unique way MacLachlan instills a sense of community and service in its students over the years. This theme beautifully aligns with the upcoming Round Square International Conference 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya, where our current student delegation will be actively participating. This event isn't just another school gathering; it's a continuation of our rich tradition of service trips and a reaffirmation of the exceptional values that define our alumni community.

The MacLachlan community has a rich tradition of service that extends far beyond the classroom. MAC alumni, scattered across the globe, have consistently embarked on service trips that demonstrate their unwavering dedication to improving communities and leaving a lasting, positive impact. This tradition serves as a testament to the values instilled in MacLachlan students during their time at the school.
The Round Square International Conference 2023 revolves around the core IDEALS that define the Round Square organization. Among these values, a profound commitment to service stands out. This commitment emphasizes the importance of giving back to society, fostering connections, and creating meaningful change.
Recently, I had the privilege of connecting with Lewis Kent, a MacLachlan alumnus who embodies the spirit of service. Lewis serves as a senior advisor with SPM Financial, is a published author, a health advocate, and a philanthropist. In my perspective, there are three fundamental pillars within communities: connection, celebration, and contribution, and Lewis has wholeheartedly embraced these pillars in building his own communities since his days at MacLachlan.

When asked about his motivation for engaging in philanthropic causes, Lewis's response solidified my belief in the enduring impact of service. He stated, "I believe it is important to do good. When you do good, I believe that good will come back to you. It initially started with fundraisers to reconnect with friends post-pandemic and evolved into connecting with strangers over causes we felt drawn to. From there, I've developed meaningful, lifelong friendships." Lewis's journey highlights the profound connections that can be forged when like-minded individuals come together to support common causes. He not only underscores the benefits of connection but also serves as an inspiration for those who may hesitate to seek help. Asking for help not only benefits the seeker but also strengthens the bonds of connection.

MacLachlan College takes pride in its commitment to nurturing a sense of responsibility and service in its students. Beyond academic excellence, the school prioritizes character development, fostering well-rounded individuals who understand the significance of making a positive impact on the world. The Round Square International Conference in Nairobi serves as a testament to the success of this holistic approach.

The Round Square Discovery Framework, along with inspiring individuals like Lewis Kent, fills us with immense optimism for the future, exemplifying the potential for positive change and the cultivation of compassionate leaders.

We invite you to share in this moment of pride and celebrate the legacy of service that unites us all. Together, we continue to make a difference in the world, and the impact of MacLachlan College resonates far beyond the classroom.
