MacLachlan's Integrated ESL Program occurs within the school year from September to June and is supported by an additional 4 week Summer ESL program. MacLachlan International students attend the majority of their courses integrated with the Canadian students and are withdrawn from the regular program for ESL classes.
All ESL courses at MacLachlan College will provide opportunities for students to develop proficiency in English in the four basic language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, students will gain knowledge of their new environment that is necessary for successful integration into the school and community.
In grades 9 to 12 students who successfully complete ESL courses are eligible to earn up to 5 credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. In general, International students will be exempted from the compulsory credit in French.
Regular Subject Classes
For students in grades 9 to 11, integrated classes will generally constitute a minimum of 75% of the school day. When ESL is required, students are withdrawn from some regular subjects and attend ESL classes for up to 80 minutes per day. Students in grades 4 – 8 also attend integrated classes for most of the school day and receive six 40 minute periods of ESL instruction per six day cycle. Students in grades 1 to 3 attend integrated classes during the school day and receive in-class support in addition to ESL group tutorials based on individual needs.
Modifications in programming and evaluation will be made on an individual basis to meet the academic needs of all students. Subject teachers and the ESL staff consult regularly to discuss student progress and program.
Core ESL Classes
Upon arrival at MacLachlan College, the student’s level of English proficiency will be assessed by the Director of International Studies to ensure appropriate placement in the various ESL classes. In the Upper School (Grades 9 to 11), MacLachlan offers 5 ESL credit courses based on the Ontario Curriculum. Some additional fees may be required if additional tutorials and/or direct instruction is required.
