  • Inquiring minds, innovation and why learning should be a messy business!

Lisa Duranleau, Executive Director | MacLachlan College
In last month’s post I mentioned how our MacLachlan team has embraced Stanford University’s Design Thinking program. This month I am going to share a little more about how design thinking informs our approach to learning at MacLachlan.
Pioneered at Stanford University, Design Thinking (DT) is a methodology for innovation that promotes the development of non-linear, creative, real world problem solving. DT is a human-centered approach to future ready competencies and learning skills.
We make it our mission to prepare MAC students for what goes on in the real world and what happens in that world is very seldom clean and linear.

  • Re-Imagining Possibilities

    MAC’s future-ready initiative

Lisa Duranleau, Executive Director | MacLachlan College
We spend a lot of time at MacLachlan contemplating the future. This is neither mere rumination nor fantasy but the real work that occupies much of our time. While we don’t gaze into crystal balls to provide insight, we devote a great deal of effort in staying at the very leading edge of contemporary and futurist educational thought.
Perhaps no where more so than in education does anticipating and contemplating the future matter more. In fact when we speak and write about re-imagining possibilities we are doing so based on the firm knowledge that what we know about the future is this - it’s going to be different!
You can read all kinds of reports presenting scenarios that by the time children entering school today graduate the jobs they will be filling don’t yet exist. So how do you go about training students within that reality?

  • Driving into the future with our eyes wide open: The transition from summer to school time

Lisa Duranleau, Executive Director | MacLachlan College
Here’s something I find curious: as the years pass I look forward to the beginning of the school year with greater enthusiasm.
You’ll probably agree that runs counter to what most of us felt when we were much younger and we approached coming back to school with a mix of  anxiety, excitement, fear and wonder. I can’t tell you how many times I hear parents tell me how much they wish they could help their children view September with the same level of enthusiasm they show at the end of the school year!
During the summer I took the opportunity to re-read some inspirational material that helps to form my approach to how we educate our students while preparing them for a lifetime of personal reward. I came upon this quote from Marshall McLuhan who wrote, “Our Age of Anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today's job with yesterday's tools and yesterday's concepts.”
Although he wrote this several decades ago, it strikes me that his observation is entirely relevant today.  McLuhan also commented, “We drive into the future using only our rearview mirror.”

  • Collaborative innovation: What is it and why does it matter to our students?

Lisa Duranleau, Executive Director | MacLachlan College
Just about one month ago we celebrated the 40th anniversary of MacLachlan College with our Ruby Gala. It was a splendid affair and a great chance to get dressed up while enjoying the company of many of our parents and school friends.

While there were many highlights during the evening one in particular stands out. A group of teachers and parents performed a flash mob dance number that brought the crowd to its feet.

It was fun and brilliantly executed. You can catch some of the action here. It got me thinking about collaboration and innovation. This group had never done anything like this before and they worked very hard to pull it off. Have you ever noticed that those things which appear so seamlessly effortless are the result of endless hours of practice, repetition, rehearsal and commitment?
